Vintage Madame Alexander Cissy dolls were introduced in 1955 and were only made from 1955 to 1959, she still remains a very iconic and popular collectible vintage doll.
The name Madame Alexander has been synonymous with beautifully crafted dolls for over 80 years. Living above her father’s doll hospital obviously impacted her eye for detail and sense of joy in making classic and unique dolls that included images of popular characters like Scarlett O’Hara. One of the most distinctive dolls she ever designed, however, was Cissy.
Although Madame Alexander Cissy dolls were only made from 1955 to 1959, she still remains a very iconic and popular collectible vintage doll.
Alexander created Cissy to be the ultimate in fashion. Her clothing would reflect the clothing industry from the time they started in production. This doll made a statement and many girls collected her more for her clothing than the doll itself! Cissy was cutting edge and the very first doll produced to reflect haut couture. This makes her a very collectible doll. Note that Cissy did have a smaller sisters called Cissett, Lissy and Elsie all of whom also wore fashion clothing.
When she was introduced, Cissy was at 20” tall, but by 1959 that had changed to 21". Her facial features hint at the trendy cosmetics of the mid-1950s. It was this basic configuration that Madame Alexander used to display the coronation of Queen Elizabeth II. She used 36 dolls, customized to represent everyone from the Queen herself to attending family members. Her work mirrored the event down to the last detail. This certainly added to the allure of Cissy, who always had something beautiful to wear from gowns to appropriate accessories in her hats, shoes and jewelry.
That’s not the end of it however. While typically tucked beneath other layers of clothing, Cissy also owned chemises, petticoats, teddies and corsets! Dressing her for a day of playful imagining took a bit of time, and if you had enough Cissy could be ready for any adventure you had in mind.
The Madame Alexander Cissy remained in circulation for a full four years before retirement. Throughout her four years this doll never lost sight of the spotlight – always having the latest and greatest in the world of design. Never before was a doll so popular that she appeared in magazines as a cosmetic promoter – including McCalls and Ladys’ Home Journal.
In shopping for Cissy, it’s very important to find her outfits in good condition. The quality of the clothing is what made this doll special. From hats and gloves to high heels, the more complete your Cissy’s wardrobe the greater her value remains. Also be careful to find trustworthy sellers. There are people who make reproduction clothing for these dolls, which can look very real to an untrained eye.
Most likely because of her continued popularity with doll collectors, Madame Alexander reintroduced the Cissy doll in 1996 and she is still in production. Most of the modern Cissy dolls and her clothing are very limited editions.
